Vaijnath dredges up amendment to Art. 371

Bangalore: Former Minister Vaijnath Patil has in a letter to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked her to clarify her stand on the demand for amending Article 371 of the Constitution for the development of the backward region of Hyderbad-Karnataka’s five districts within a reasonable time. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Patil said that he had also asked her to inform him whether the Congress was serious about implementing the recommendations of the High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances for developing backward taluks, including those in the region. He said that he would wait for a reasonable time for the reply to his two demands on which he had been agitating for ten years and then take a decision to resign from the party.

Mr. Patil also reminded Ms. Gandhi that he was one of the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders, along with eight persons including their leader, former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramiah, who were admitted to the Congress. All of them were assured that they would get party ticket to contest in the Assembly elections, but he was denied a chance to contest on the party ticket. Mr. Patil said that he would continue his agitation for amending the Constitution for the development of the backward area.
