“Music tunes the mind”

Staff Reporter

MUSIC TO EARS: Collector T.N. Venkatesh (second from right) handing over music instruments to teachers of the Government Music School in Karur on Tuesday.

KARUR: Training in music inspires students to achieve greater things in life.

The mind gets tuned better through training in music, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after handing over a set of five thavils (a percussion instrument) and nagaswaram (a wind instrument) for the benefit of students in those disciplines at the Government Music School here, Mr. Venkatesh urged the students to make full use of them to achieve laurels in their chosen field.

Pointing out that exposure to music chastens and sensitises one to tender feelings, Mr. Venkatesh said that rigorous training and practice alone would help hone one’s music skills.

There was no short cut to success, he reminded the students.

Assistant Director, Art and Culture, R. Gunasekaran, thanked the Collector for his “wonderful gesture” in acceding to his request for sanction of funds to meet the expenses of buying the instruments.

While a sum of Rs. 50,000 released under the Collector’s discretionary grant met the cost of five thavils, a donation of Rs.17,500 from the Karur Vysya Bank was used to buy five nagaswarams, he added.

Headmistress Ramani, thavil teacher Jayaraj, Nagaswaram teacher Kandasamy, Bharatanatyam teacher Sujatha, Kuralisai teacher Ayyanar and Thevara teacher Swaminathan were among those who participated in the programme.
