Flood control: Cabinet sub-committee meets

Discusses short-term measures to be adopted

Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet sub-committee constituted to find a permanent solution to the problem of flooding in the capital city met here on Wednesday to discuss the proposals submitted by various departments and suggestions received from the public during the hearings conducted on Tuesday.

The meeting decided to consult technical experts to resolve the flooding problem.

Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph who is also the chairman of the Cabinet sub-committee presided over the meeting.

Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran and Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran participated.

The meeting discussed the short-term measures to be adopted for flood control at Thampanoor and Pazhavangady, the two areas in the city most prone to waterlogging.

It entrusted the high-level committee constituted by the government with the responsibility of screening the proposals received at the public hearing and coming up with a detailed project report.

The technical committee will meet again on May 5 and the Cabinet sub-committee on May 6.

As many as 96 proposals were received from individuals, institutions and mass organisations at the public hearing on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister has directed the committee to submit its report in 15 days.
