BANGALORE: State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) M.N. Vidyashankar has called upon the political parties to desist from utilising May Day programmes (on Thursday) as platforms for party functions or election campaign. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, he said the parties should not hoist party flags at May Day programmes, which would be considered as violation of the model code of conduct. A circular has been issued to Labour and Industries Department and private companies, particularly information technology, asking them to provide sufficient time for employees to cast their vote. Referring to the involvement of self-help groups in election campaign, he said SHGs were non-governmental organisations and they could take part in any activity they wanted. Anganwadi workers were paid by government and hence they cannot participate in the campaign, though they were members of SHGs. On transportation of election material, he said parties and candidates have to provide prior information to the election officers.
