CHENNAI: A panel of officials of the Tiruvarur district administration, Agriculture Department and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will study the extent of damage suffered by farmers in the wake of discharge of chemical effluents by the Thirumakottai (Kovilkalappal) gas power plant at Mannargudi, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami told the Assembly on Wednesday. Responding to a calling attention motion from V. Sivapunniam (Communist Party of India), the Minister said in April, work on a five-acre solar evaporation pond had begun. It was expected to be completed in six months. Once it was ready, there would not be any more discharge of chemical effluents. The Minister said that after a reverse osmosis plant was commissioned in May 2006, the quantity of discharge was much less. Age limit relaxationWhen Pattali Makkal Katchi whip T. Velmurugan raised the issue of relaxation of the age limit for about 1,700 agriculture graduates, who could not get placement for several years, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam said the present regime had already revised the age limit for agriculture diploma holders. In the case of degree holders, there was no age limit. As for the diploma holders of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, the age limit was 40 years. In the case of Backward Classes/Most Backward Classes, it was 35 years.
