Atiq Khan

LUCKNOW: A six-year-old Dalit girl suffered serious burns when a youth belonging to an upper caste threw her into a garbage dump fire at Karoli village in Mathura district late on Tuesday.

The youth, identified as 16-year-old Sunny, son of Ashok Thakur, was arrested by the Chata police and a case registered under the Scheduled Castes/Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

A Home Department spokesman said here on Wednesday that the girl had been admitted to a local hospital.

At Chandanpurwa village in Etawah district, a 22-year-old Dalit youth was set afire on Monday by a shopkeeper, Chunna Pandit, over the payment of a sum of Rs. 10.

The youth, who suffered 70 per cent burns, is now in hospital.
