PM to media: don’t stop with the here & now

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said the media would cease to play the fourth estate if they confined themselves to “the here and now.”

The media could claim to be the fourth estate only when they took a larger view of daily events, shaped public opinion constructively and recorded history even as it was being made.

Dr. Singh was addressing a function organised here to release ‘The Tribune 125 Years: An Anthology’. A combination of providing news, shaping views and guiding society was what gave the media a special status, he said.
