MANAPPARAI: Councillors of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) staged a sit-in stir at the council hall here on Wednesday, protesting non-supply of drinking water to their wards, despite setting up of pipelines. Alleging that a few Congress councillors from the peripheral wards, where an overhead tank was located, were preventing the supply, they demanded a fair distribution of drinking water to the wards above political differences. No sooner the council meeting was called to order, the DMK councillors, D. Rajendran, T. Balraj, M. Arockiam, B. Nazrudeen, N. Nallammal and M. Tamizharasi, squatted on the floor of the council hall, demanding immediate distribution of drinking water through the overhead tank at Theerampatti, falling in ward 25 and 26 represented by the Congress councillors. They said that though pipelines had been set up for the distribution of drinking water from this tank to the adjoining wards including Balambal Nagar, represented by the DMK councillors, the Congress councillors were blocking the supply, apprehending that both the duration and the quantum of drinking water would come down to Theerampatti. The councillors withdrew the agitation after the Chairperson, E.V. Saroja, who presided over the meeting, assured them that immediate action would be taken to share it. A few councillors pleaded for clearing of unlicensed shops at the bus stand here.
