Woman found hanging

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: In what appears to be a case of dowry harassment, a young woman was found hanging in her house at Pitampura here on Wednesday. Her family alleged that she was strangled and then hanged to make it appear as a case of suicide.

Twenty-four-year-old Aastha Jain, a resident of F Block, allegedly hanged herself to death in her room around 2 p.m., a day after her first wedding anniversary. Her mother-in-law Asha Jain (58) and other family members were present in the house at the time, the police said.

In a suicide note, Aastha purportedly blamed her in-laws for constantly harassing her for dowry. Aastha’s husband Amit Jain looks after his family’s steel business.

Blaming the Jains for harassing his daughter for dowry, Aastha’s father Ashok Jain said: “They called us in the afternoon saying that Aastha had committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan. On reaching the house, we found that her body had turned blue and was hanging from the fan. She could not have committed suicide. ”
