This Day That Age
The topic that received utmost attention during the debate in the Rajya Sabha on April 30 was freedom of the Press. Two Ministers, Dr. B.V. Keskar (Information and Broadcasting) and Mr. Abid Ali (Labour), stoutly denied allegations that the Government was interfering with the freedom of the Press or that it was being partial to working journalists. Intervening in the debate, Dr. B.V. Keskar denied the allegations and said it was with the specific purpose of carefully examining this question that the Press Commission was appointed. The Government wanted to be very sure as to the lines on which the development of the Press should take place. As a result of the recommendations of the Commission one or two enactments were made. In this connection the Rajya Sabha had had many occasions to discuss the question of the freedom of the Press.
