dated May 2, 1958: “At the wicket”

Throughout the coming English cricket season Norman Yardley, former England captain and test selector, will be writing for The Hindu, a regular weekly article on the game he has played and knows so well. It will appear under the title, “At the wicket.” Yardley is one of those rare sportsmen who can write as expertly as they performed in the field and will give the most authoritative commentary. It will cover every aspect of cricket including the England v. New Zealand series and discuss the players chosen for these Tests and the MCC tour of Australia. Yardley, one of the game’s finest all-rounders, captained Cambridge in 1938 and led Yorkshire from 1948 until 1955, when he retired. He played for England in no less than 20 Tests – 14 times as captain – and toured South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India with representative teams.
