COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Thursday claimed that at least 44 LTTE cadres, two soldiers and two police personnel were killed in fighting along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) in the past 48 hours. A Defence Ministry statement said Special Task Force (STF) personnel foiled an LTTE attempt to infiltrate the Kabethigollawa area. Two LTTE cadres and two police commandos were killed. The STF later killed the LTTE cadres. The Ministry claimed troops had captured the LTTE’s stronghold — 18 Base— located north of Parayakulam, Mannar. “By monitoring radio communication, it was learnt that 42 cadres were killed while another 38 were injured,” said the ministry. In another development, some members of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) said they “stand by the clear assertions of their Concluding Public Statement, and disassociate themselves from any attempt by the government to reformulate and reinterpret their unanimously agreed text.” The statement came a day after Human Rights Minister said the IIGEP had “completely gone back” on the issue relating to the government’s lack of political will to address human rights issues.
