Children of Akshara to perform “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. William Shakespeare’s perennial favourite, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, will be staged by children of Akshara Theatre as part of their “Diksha Programme” at Pipal Tree Theatre in the Capital this Saturday. Adapted and directed by Jalabala Vaidya, the play promises to transport the audience to the enchanted woods peopled with the little changeling Indian prince, naughty elves, mischievous Puck and playful and pretty little fairies. Fairy Queen Titania and fairy King Oberon are portrayed as magical and whimsical characters who, with a flick of their wands, create the climate change we so dread today. The characters in the play include the hero of Athens, Theseus, his Amazon bride Hippolyta, and their courtiers and the bumpkin city artisans led by Bottom the weaver. All the characters are earthy and funny, tragic and comic, and courageously mis-presented by Bottom and his pals. 37 childrenThe 37 children aged four to 16 years who act in the play come from 22 leading public schools of the Capital. Diksha, Akshara Theatre’s nine-year-old programme for training young people in the classical arts, has resulted in a sound artistic grounding for children in the fields of theatre, music, Sanskrit chanting, painting, Kathak, Yoga and the martial arts Akshara Theatre was founded in 1972 by playwright Gopal Sharman and his actress wife Jalabala Vaidya. It has many productions to its name, the most famous being “The Ramayana” — an epic play in English in four acts which Sharman was contracted to write for The Royal Shakespeare Company of Great Britain. Later, Akshara Theatre entered the field of television and has made many successful series and programmes for Indian and American television channels since then. Kunal Diwan
