Central varsity to implement OBC quota in phases

HYDERABAD: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) will implement reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in a phased manner with not less than five per cent this academic year in all its courses. In the following two years, the increase would be 11 per cent each. Addressing a press conference here, Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor of UoH, said that 27 per cent reservations would, however, be implemented fully from this academic year in the 17 new courses being introduced and these included courses in M.Sc, M.Phil, M.Tech and Ph.D.

Out of the 1,664 seats available in the university, 239 are reserved for OBCs. The number is more than five per cent and is arrived at the facilities available in each department. So, the number might vary from department to department. In the 480 seats available in the 17 new courses, 145 seats have been reserved for OBCs as per the Supreme Court judgment.

Stating that emphasis was being laid on research, Prof. Hasnain said the university, in association with the A.P. Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), was setting up a knowledge and innovation park in a 50-acre land on the campus. The university would have 89 per cent stake in it while the APIIC would have the remaining, with the latter creating infrastructure. The park would have MNCs setting up their research facility centres and it would be a boon for teachers and researchers. “It will take a shape within two to three weeks,” he said.
