Adampur by-poll to have lasting impact: Chautala

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The results of the three upcoming Haryana Assembly by-elections scheduled for May 22 would give a new direction to national and State politics, asserted the Indian National Lok Dal chief and former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala on Thursday.

Addressing a public rally after the INLD nominee for the Adampur seat, Sampat Singh, filed his nomination papers in Hisar, Mr. Chautala said the outcome of the Adampur by-election would have “a long-lasting impact on the polity of the country and the State”. The by-election was necessitated after the sitting Congress MLA, former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, was disqualified upon joining the newly-floated Haryana Janhit Congress.

Bhajan Lal in the fray

Interestingly, Mr. Bhajan Lal had filed his papers for this by-election on Wednesday.

Mr. Chautala hit out at the Congress for the present bout of inflation. He said the farmers were not getting due remuneration for their produce. He condemned the Government’s decision to impose a duty of Rs.8,000 per tonne on export of basmati rice. He said this decision would ruin the farmers.

Mr. Chautala also criticised Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s “anti- farmer attitude” and alleged that the UPA Government was “importing cheap and low-quality wheat from other countries at higher prices but not giving due prices to the local farmers”.

He reminded the people that in the last election also Mr. Bhajan Lal had sought public support on the ground that it was his “last election”.
