CHENNAI: The Marina Beach on Thursday played host to an awareness campaign focussed on a sizzling topic — summer and tips to escape the scorching heat. The campaign, held near the Gandhi statue, was organised by a group of college students aged between 18 and 22. They came together to form a charitable trust, Service to People in Need Everywhere (Spine), a year ago. Spine Charitable Trust’s president Hilton Ronald Albert, a social work student, said: “We decided to campaign on the issue as it is a major problem affecting people’s health during this time of the year.” Visitors to the Beach stopped by to read the colourful placards with messages about summer tips. Besides display of placards with slogans such as ‘drink more fluids’, ‘eat fruits’ and ‘encourage children to play indoors’, the students also distributed pamphlets with details about health food to beat the heat and child care during summer. The trust was formed by like-minded students of various colleges in and around the city. “We wanted to contribute to the society in a small way. We have organised several programmes such as rural health camps and distribution of clothes to the poor,” Mr. Albert said. A member of the trust and a social work student A.B. Balachander said the trust members involved themselves in social work activities during their leisure time. A major part of the funding for the activities was from the members’ contribution. The organisation also plans to distribute caps to children in rural areas.
