PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of Indian Coffee House Employees Union on Thursday asked the government to earmark places to set up hotels at public places including the beach, medical college, children’s hospital, Legislative Assembly and new bus terminus to give employment to workers and at the same time provide quality food at nominal prices. The ninth conference of the union, through a resolution, urged the government to take steps to provide space to start hotels at crowded areas. The Indian Coffee House Employees Cooperative Society had branches at Jawaharlal Nehru Street and Anglo-French Textile Mills, it pointed out. Apart from this, the association asked the government to allot an additional fund of Rs. 2 crore towards construction of a building on Jawaharlal Nehru Street. Already, the government had allotted Rs. 50 lakh to construct a building owned by the society. The union also urged the government to expedite the works to avoid loss for the society. New payscale
A new payscale should be implemented for the employees of the cooperative from January 1, 2009, it demanded. The union said the government should earmark Rs. 60 lakh to settle the salary arrears for the employees, besides providing financial assistance of Rs. two lakh to families of employees who died in harness and give immediate employment to their children. Among other things, the union demanded a welfare board for the employees and a salary hike in view of the 50th year celebrations of the society.
