Hubli-Dharwad
HUBLI: The former Mayor of Hubli-Dharwad Anilkumar Patil, who has been denied the Congress ticket to contest from Hubli-Dharwad Central Assembly Constituency, has said that he would contest as an independent. Mr. Patil told The Hindu over telephone from Bangalore that there was no recognition in the party for those who worked for strengthening it. The high command had overlooked his contribution to the party in strengthening it in the region and it had hurt him. He would not be joining any party but contest as an independent candidate. “I will file my nomination papers on Saturday,” he said. The Congress has announced nomination of KLE Society director Shankaranna Munavalli from the constituency, where the former minister Jagadish Shettar is contesting. Although the name of Sunil Sandra, son of late minister Gopinath Sandra, had come up during the final rounds of discussions, it was dropped following vehement opposition to the move by local leaders and activists. Anilkumar Patil had unsuccessfully contested against Mr. Shettar in the previous election on the Congress ticket. Not to contestThe former minister S.R. Morey, who has been denied the ticket, has decided not to contest in the election. He said he had been with the party for more than three decades and there was no question of quitting the party. However till yesterday, Mr. Morey had been saying that he had kept other options open.
