CHENNAI: State Bank of India and Madras Sporting Union emerged winners on the opening day of the semifinal league phase of the Champion Club football tournament here. SBI defeated Tuticorin Port Trust 3-0 while Madras Sporting Union beat Arrows FC 4-2. Sabeeth took SBI into the lead a minute past the half-hour mark and from there SBI did not look back. K.G. Joseph consolidated the position in the 65th minute and 10 minutes later substitute Parthiban scored the goal off a Joseph pass to complete the tally. The contest seemed more evenly placed in the second match though Arrow’s fight began after it had gone into arrears, thanks to Samuel Jackson’s 9th minute goal for MSU. A minute before lemon time, Arrows slotted in the equaliser through Sanjay Gandhi. In the 78th minute, Marikani put MSU in the lead with a header. Arrows bounced back two minutes later to equalise through Ezekeil. After that, MSU seemed to regain touch and two goals in a span of three minutes felled Arrows — Marikani and substitute Nagarathinam being the scorers.
