GULBARGA: A few prominent candidates in the district are now contesting from the parties which they had fought against in the past elections. In Shahapur, the former Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur, who had fought three Assembly elections on Janata Dal ticket, is contesting as a Congress candidate this time. His political foe Shivashekharappa Patil Sirwal, who had fought five elections on Congress ticket, is contesting as a JD(S) candidate now. Mr. Dharshanapur quit the JD(S) along with the former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash and joined the Congress recently. The Congress gave him ticket after rejecting the application of Mr. Sirwal. Mr. Sirwal joined the JD (S) though Congress leaders such as M. Mallikarjun Kharge and N. Dharam Singh tried to persuade him against quitting the party. The Janata Dal (S) not only admitted him, but also gave him ticket for Shahapur. The former Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council B R Patil, who fought five elections on Janata Party and later Janata Dal ticket and won from Aland in 1983 and 2004 elections, is contesting as a Congress candidate from Aland.
Excise contractor and two-time MLA Subash Guttedar, who unsuccessfully fought on Congress ticket in 2004 against Mr. B.R. Patil, is contesting as a JD (S) candidate from Aland. Mr. Guttedar, who won from Aland in 1994 as a Karnataka Congress Party candidate and in 1999 on JD(S) ticket, later joined the Congress to fight the 2004 elections. But the Congress denied him ticket this time. Mr. Kharge and the former Minister Baburao Chinchansur have swapped their seats. Mr. Kharge shifted from Gurmitkal (reserved) to Chitapur after the status of his traditional constituency was changed during the delimitation process. Chitapur is a reserved constituency now. Mr. Chinchansur, who won from Chitapur three times from 1989 and lost it to Vishwanath Patil Hebbal of the JD(S) in 2004, is contesting from Gurmitkal. M.Y. Patil, who won from Afzalpur as a JD(S) candidate in 2004, is contesting from the BJP against his old rival Malikayya Guttedar of the Congress. In Surpur, Raju Gowda, who won as a candidate of the Kannada Nadu party in 2004 and later became an associate member of the JD (S), is contesting on BJP ticket against his old rival and one-time close associate Raja Venkatappa Naik of the Congress. Similarly, Basavantreddy Mudnal, who contested as a JD(S) rebel and won in 2004, is seeking election on BJP ticket from Yadgir. He is contesting against his traditional rival A.B. Maalakaraddy of the Congress.
