Mixed response to bandh call

Tiruchi Bureau

KARAIKAL: There was good response in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s nationwide hartal call on Friday. Most of the shops and commercial establishments downed shutters in Karaikal town and in Tirunallar.

Karaikal police have arrested 142 BJP cadres including Arulmurugan, Karaikal district president of the BJP when they took out a rally to picket at the bus stand here condemning the price rise of essential commodities and petroleum products.

Nagapattinam

The hartal call given by the BJP did not evoke any response in Nagapattinam district and all the shops and commercial establishments were found working in all the places including Mayiladuturai, considered as the BJP pocket in the district. Buses plied as usual throughout the district. Police said that except a minor incident at Mayiladuturai and a rally taken out by BJP cadres, the situation was peaceful throughout the district.

Pudukottai

BJP cadres staged a human chain agitation here on Friday protesting the Central Government’s failure in checking the rise in prices of essential commodities. Led by the District President V. Murugesan they launched the stir from the Old Bus Stand. The State representative of the party Sundarrajan was among those who participated.
