Container depot gets minor port status

KOCHI: The inland container depot nearing completion at Muttam in Nattakam in Kottayam district has been declared a minor port by the State government.

The depot is being developed through public-private participation by a joint venture company promoted by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (KINFRA) and the South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry with Union government assistance. The declaration as a minor port has been done under the Indian Ports Act, 1908, says a top official .

The container depot is being developed as an export promotion facility with assistance from the Union Ministry of Commerce. The project cost is Rs. 9.36 crore, out of which Rs. 7.4 crore is Central assistance, including a loan of Rs. 5 crore.

Once completed, the facility will have a capacity to handle 250 TEU (20-foot equivalent units) of containers, both exports and imports. It is being set up with the intention of catering to the needs of nearly 1,000 registered export and import concerns in the districts of Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta.
