Exemption from service tax sought

Thiruvananthapuram: Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran has asked Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to exempt primary credit cooperative societies from paying service tax. He said theses societies played a key role in meeting the financial needs of the rural populace. They also undertook welfare activities without any grant or subsidy from the government, he added. Many of these institutions were in red. The payment of service tax would make the functioning of these societies difficult, he added. — Special Correspondent
