INLD, Congress nominees file papers for Gohana by-poll

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Indian National Lok Dal candidate, K.C. Bangar, and the Congress nominee, Jagbir Singh Malik, on Friday filed their nomination papers before the Returning Officer for the Gohana Assembly by-election scheduled for May 22.

The by-election was necessitated after sitting Congress MLA Dharampal Singh Malik was disqualified under the anti-defection law upon joining the newly-floated Haryana Janhit Congress. Interestingly, Mr. Malik had filed his nomination papers on Thursday.

While Mr. Jagbir Singh Malik submitted his nomination papers in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Haryana PCC president Phool Chand Mullana, Dr. Bangar was accompanied by the INLD president, former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala.

‘Common man angry’

Meanwhile, addressing a public meeting at Gohana, Mr. Chautala exhorted the voters to “throw away the incompetent and corrupt Congress Government”. He charged that the common man was frustrated and angry on account of rising prices, deteriorating law and order and dismal supply of water and electricity.

Meanwhile, the Congress nominee for the Indri by-election, Bhim Sen Mehta, filed his nomination papers in Karnal in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting at Indri, 25 km from Karnal, the Chief Minister assured the voters of all-round development of the constituency.

He also accused the former MLA and Haryana Janhit Congress nominee Rakesh Kamboj of ignoring the interests of the constituency. “He never approached me for initiating any development work in the constituency but rather he opposed the Government’s proposal of carving out a HUDA sector in Indri under the pretext that farmers’ land would be acquired,” Mr. Hooda said.

The Chief Minister described Mr. Mehta as “an honest man who is devoted to development of the constituency”.
