GLOBAL LINK: Users browsing at an Internet cafe in Berhampur on Friday. BERHAMPUR: Being in Berhampur, Nita could upload the scanned copies of medical reports of several years of her father for the reference of the surgeons before her father went for a by-pass surgery in Hyderabad. In the same way Gopal Krushna Panigrahy was to blackmail a girl and her family by uploading voluminous files of her lewd video on the net. The galloping speed of Internet connectivity has started to change the lives of inhabitants even in small urban centers. It has made uploading and downloading of data an easy affair. Police officials like Abhimanyu Nayak, the Inspector in charge of town police station, who solved the first cyber crime of the city recently says increase in the Internet speed is one of the reasons behind the inflow of cyber crime into places like Berhampur. According to him the student Gopal Krushna, who was arrested by him last month could desire to upload voluminous MPEG video files of the girl only because the increased speed of the Internet allowed him to do so. For students and knowledge freaks Internet connectivity with increased speed is a great boon. Aswini Samal, a student of electronics stream spends hours downloading rare books and softwares from the Internet. The librarian of Sanjay Memorial Institute of Technology (SMIT), Swadhin Patro felt ‘search’ on the net has become an easy affair with increased speed of connectivity. But many also add that it has made pornography more accessible for the youngsters. “Earlier they were only seeing the pornographic pictures but now they are able to download video clips,” they say. But there are many music freaks like Bishnu Upadhyay who search for music freaks like him to share rare vintage music clips. According to broadband sub-divisional engineer, P.K.Sahu just a few years back the customers of the city were getting Internet through dial-up connections with a speed up to 56 KBPS. The ISDN connections which were said to be the speediest had 128 KBPS speed. But broadband has changed lives. With a broadband connection one can access Internet at 256 KBPS to 8 MBPS speed. “Speed obviously has its jerks and the benefits of increased speed of Internet would surely have some dark patches of its misuse,” said Sunil Rath, a computer educationist of the city.
