SALEM: Passengers of the Cannanore–Yeshwanthpur special express train had a miraculous escape when its diesel engine caught fire between Sankagiri and Mylaripatti stations on Friday.
Fire tenders from Sankagiri extinguished the fire. The engine was detached from bogies to prevent the fire from spreading. The engine was gutted.
Fourteen trains were detained for three to four hours at various stations on the Coimbatore-Salem-Chennai sector.
Railway sources said when the train was nearing Sankagiri station, the pilot noticed heavy smoke in the third section of the locomotive. Before he could stop the train, the flames leapt out of the chambers. Another locomotive from the Erode yard replaced the damaged one. The train continued its onward journey after being detained for four hours.
