Six die as auto, bus collide


Five in the auto, including the driver, died on the spot

The auto was ferrying nine people to Rajapalayam


RAJAPALAYAM: Six passengers travelling in an overcrowded autorickshaw were killed when it collided head on with a State transport corporation bus on the Srivilliputtur-Tirunelveli highway near here on Friday.

While five of them, including the driver, P. Selvaraj (25) of Ambedkar Nagar, and V. Ganesan (35) of Sholapuram, died on the spot, one died at the Government Hospital here. One of them was M. Muthu (24) of Asilapuram.

Three passengers M. Murugan (40), K. Selvendran (20) and S. Irulappan (26) have been admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The identity of the other deceased persons was not known immediately.

According to the police, the auto driver, on a return trip from Sholapuram to Rajapalayam town, had picked up nine passengers waiting at a bus stop. The vehicle rammed the bus proceeding to Tirunelveli near a bridge at Mudugudi.

Minister for Backward Classes Welfare K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran and Collector V. Chandrasekaran visited the spot.
