VELLORE: The 12,000-odd uncorrected English-II answer papers of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate public examinations of Villupuram district were taken to Chennai on Friday by officials of the Directorate of Government Examinations for sorting, salvaging and valuation. According to sources in the Education Department, out of the 12,808 answer papers, affected by the fire at the Voorhees Higher Secondary School here on April 24, 90 per cent was safe. They were only partly burnt or had become wet when fire services personnel tried to put out the fire. The wet papers have been salvaged by drying. Only about 1500 papers were destroyed in the fire. While valuation of the papers in the Vellore centre was completed on Wednesday, the work on bunching of marks was in progress at the on Friday. A team of officials, including Vasanthi Jeevanandam, Director of Government Examinations, Chennai; Senthamizhchelvi, Joint Director of Government Examinations (Secondary Education); P. Mani, Joint Director of Education (Higher Secondary); and two Deputy Directors of the Education Department visited the valuation centre on Thursday and made arrangements for the despatch of the answer papers. On getting the clearance from the forensic experts of the Police Department, the officials took the papers to Chennai.
