Take fresh look at Nepal-India treaty: Yechury

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury has said the Nepal-India treaty signed in 1950 should be given a fresh look.

Mr. Yechury, who was here on a two-day visit, was talking to journalists after a meeting with Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda at his residence in Naya Bazaar on Thursday.

“The treaty that was signed at the time of monarchy should be given a fresh look now; and it should be modified.” He, however, did not specify what kind of modifications is needed.

“This will be known only when the new government is formed here,” he said.

Nepal and India should discuss the issue and reach a conclusion.

The CPN(M) has been demanding abrogation of the India-Nepal Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1950.

In New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon said on Tuesday that India was willing to review the treaty.

Mr. Yechury said the Maoists had got a massive mandate in the elections to the Constituent Assembly and he came to Nepal to extend his wishes to the party. Nevertheless, they should renounce violence and join mainstream politics.

Meanwhile, the Maoists continued with disruptive activities in different parts of the country. In Rajbiraj, they captured the land of a local Bhubaneswar Safi, blaming him for voting the Nepali Congress. In Narayangadh, Krishna Prasad Silwal was attacked by the Maoists for not abiding by their People’s Court.
