Pipeline repair progressing

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Repair work on the broken water supply pipeline to West Kochi continued on Friday. Water supply from the Perumanoor pump house was completely stopped to facilitate the work.

Apart from the water supply disruption to some of the West Kochi areas such as Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Thopumpady and Chellanam, other places like Thevara and areas around the General Hospital, the District Collector’s camp office and supply to barges from Vypeen were also affected on Friday.

A senior official of the Kerala Water Authority said that the leak could not be repaired completely as there were only a few workers available because of the holiday of May Day on Thursday, when the pipeline going across the Cochin Shipyard premises were found to be damaged.

According to the official, “75 per cent of the work has been completed. Work had gone on throughout the night but it could not be completed because a lot of construction debris had to be removed from the location where the pipes were lying 4 metres deep. A trial pumping will be done as soon as the work is over.
