Staff Reporter

A major fire broke out in a building at Kalyanpuri where bamboo goods were stored

Incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when everyone was asleep

NEW DELHI: Four persons, including two women and a child, were killed and as many injured in separate incidents of fire across the Capital on Friday.

Four members belonging to two families were burnt to death in a major fire that broke out on the ground floor of a multi-storey building at Kalyanpuri in the early hours. The fire broke out in a room on the ground floor where bamboo goods were stored and spread rapidly to the other floors.

Three fire tenders took over two hours to douse the flames.

“The fire broke out around 2 a.m. when everyone was asleep. All the inmates were trapped. The exact cause of the fire was not immediately known, but prima facie it appears to have been caused by an electric short-circuit,” said a senior police officer.

The deceased have been identified as Lalit (15), Nutan (20), Rajjo (35) and Karan Singh (45). The injured -- Yogesh (14), Mala (22), Mena (35) and Bhagat Singh (50) -- have been admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and are said to be in a critical condition.

In another incident in the trans-Yamuna area, a serious fire broke out in a scrap dealer’s shop at Kabul Nagar around 5 a.m. Eight fire tenders took over four hours to douse the flames. No casualties were reported.

In the third incident, a fire broke out in an electrical goods godown-cum-office in Sadar Bazaar around 8 a.m. Twenty-one fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the flames were put out in 30 minutes.

The firemen had problems in reaching the spot because of narrow lanes.

“No casualties were reported as the incident took place in the morning when the market was closed,” said a senior police officer.

In the fourth incident, a fire broke out in a cardboards godown at Madipur in West Delhi in the morning. No casualty was reported. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
