Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac KOCHI: The State-level inauguration of the amnesty scheme for cases that has been pending in the Sales Tax Department for years will be held here on June 26, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Dr. Isaac said thousands of cases were expected to be settled under the scheme and nearly Rs.150 crore of outstanding tax dues was expected to be collected. More than 15,000 such cases were pending to be resolved in the State. At present, there were only eight deputy commissioners to handle cases on which appeals had been filed. This would be increased to 16. Besides, 10 assistant commissioners would be redeployed to settle old cases, he said. Cases for which appeals had been filed would be settled within three months. Existing government stays in all such cases would be vacated. Some of the cases date back to the erstwhile Travancore-Kochi era. The total outstanding dues would come to around Rs.3,020 crore. Many of the cases had become outdated and respondents no longer live.
