BHOPAL: The MLA from Lanji in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, Kishore Samrite, was arrested by the police here on Saturday afternoon following an alleged attempt to commit suicide by trying to jump into the Upper Lake. Mr. Samrite, who was recently suspended from the Samajwadi Party on disciplinary grounds, had been in the news for his claim of being paid Rs.10 lakh in cash by the Congress party to vote for a Congress-backed independent candidate during the recent Rajya Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh. On a rowing boatMr. Samrite used a rowing boat to reach the deep part of the Upper Lake here on Saturday. Meanwhile, one of his aides sent a word across and some media persons were quick to arrive at the scene. It is learnt that Mr. Samrite had also informed the police of the step. A police team and a few divers were rushed to the spot in a speed boat. Mr. Samrite was brought to the police station. He was arrested under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code for attempt to commit suicide. He was subsequently released on bail and the matter was brought to the notice of the State Assembly Speaker. Mr. Samrite later told media persons that he had been compelled to take this step to draw attention towards various problems of his constituency. He said he had met the Chief Minister but nothing had been done to address the issues confronting his electorate.
