Government gives up move to acquire lands

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State government has given up its proposal to acquire lands in south Madurai in order to set up a SIPCOT Industrial Park.

Disclosing this on Friday, a release from the Chairman and Managing Director, SIPCOT, said the Madurai Collector’s report on the lands to be taken up for acquisition described the lands as fertile lands on which flowers, fruit bearing plants, pulses and vegetables were being planted.

There were also 90 irrigation wells in the area.

The collector’s report also added that the owners of these lands were mostly small farmers, who were poor and belonged to Backward, Most Backward Classes and Adi Dravida castes.

In the light of this, the government decided to re-assess its plans to start the industrial park in the 894.16 acre land identified for the purpose and wholly give up acquisition plans.
