EXTREME STEP: Samajwadi Party MLA Kishore Samrite from Lanji (third from left) being shifted by the police after his alleged suicide attempt in Upper Lake, Bhopal, on Saturday. BHOPAL: The MLA from Lanji in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, Kishore Samrite, was arrested by the police here on Saturday following his alleged attempt to commit suicide by trying to jump into the Upper Lake. Mr. Samrite, who was recently suspended from the Samajwadi Party on disciplinary grounds, was in the news when he alleged that he was paid Rs.10 lakh in cash by the Congress to vote for a Congress-backed independent candidate during the just concluded Rajya Sabha election. On Saturday, Mr. Samrite used a rowing boat to reach a spot where the lake was deep. In the meantime, one of his staffers had sent a message across and some mediapersons arrived on the scene. Mr. Samrite had also reportedly informed the police about the step he was going to take. Hence a police team and a few divers rushed to the spot in a speed boat. Mr. Samrite was brought to the police station, where he was arrested under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code for attempting to commit suicide. He was released on bail and the matter was brought to the notice of the Assembly Speaker. Mr. Samrite later told media persons that he had been compelled to take the step to draw attention to the problems in his constituency. He said he had met Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan but nothing had been done to address the issues.
