Birth anniversary of Sikh Guru Arjan Dev celebrated

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Sikh community in Kochi celebrated the 445th birth anniversary of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, at Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Thevara on Friday.

The programme began with the reciting of religious hymns and Gurbani kirtan by children followed by elder raghis. Rituals such as ‘Ardas’ and ‘Sampati’ were held after the recital of hymns and kirtans. All the members later assembled at the free community kitchen (langar) hall and had food together.

A press release issued by the organisers said the fifth Guru was bestowed ‘divine light’ by his predecessor Guru Ramdas in 1581. He was a saint and scholar of the highest quality and repute. Guru Arjan Dev compiled the hymns and compositions of his predecessors, including Guru Nanak Dev.

He made Sikhism popular during his lifetime, the release said.
