BIDAR: Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta on Saturday said that seven election observers had been appointed for the Assembly elections in the district on May 22. Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Gupta said X. Anil (Basavakalayan), M. Gilani (Humnabad), P.T. Nalwade (Bidar South), Pushpa Latha Singh (Bidar), Kuldeep Sharma (Bhalki), Jyothi Prakash Das (Aurad) and Anuj Gogia (expenditure) had been appointed as observers. DriveMr. Gupta said that the drive to issue electronic photo identity cards to voters in rural areas of the district would be between May 5 and 15. Only voters who had their names in the voters’ list would be allowed to vote. As many as 1.4 lakh cards had been issued to voters, achieving a target of 73 per cent, he said. Superintendent of Police A. Subramanyeshwara Rao said 17 cases of violation of model code of conduct had been booked in the district. The Excise Department had booked 196 cases and seized material worth Rs. 12 lakh during raids in the district. In custodyAs a precautionary measure, 219 people had been taken into custody. As many as 1,072 licensed firearms had been deposited in police stations in the district, he said. Mr. Rao said steps had been taken for the smooth conduct of elections. To a query, Mr. Rao said no untoward incident related to elections had been reported in the district.
