Union seeks basic facilities for workers

KOTHAGUDEM: The AITUC-affiliated Singareni Collieries Workers’ Union on Saturday urged the SCCL management to provide coalminers at work with buttermilk packets and ORH packets to offset the impact of the gruelling summer.

Union deputy general secretary D. Seshaiah said that some 7,000 men were working braving the oppressive heat in the 12 opencast mines in the four districts.

The conditions in the underground mines were equally severe.

The temperature and humidity in the mines would be above the average high temperature recorded in the area. The high temperature was often accompanied by high humidity, which the body could not tolerate. The heat wave could result in a very dangerous situation. The men working on the dumpers would be bearing the brunt of it. He said that the company had for long been proving the workers with buttermilk and ORH packets. The supply was yet to be taken up in the mines this year.

He wanted supply of buttermilk to be continued till the onset of monsoon. Giving tips on summer wear for the coal workers, he said that hats would give some protection from heat. But they should use towels also while at work. The workers should be cautious while working in harsh sun.

He wanted the company to take up regular watering of passages and road connecting the mining places for dust control. He said coal workers must be provided with the basic facilities at work place.
