THENI: Hundred cusecs of water has been released from Periyar dam for Sri Gowmariamman Temple Chithirai festival at Veerapandi here on Saturday.
The released water would reach the temple area on Saturday night.
It would be useful for pilgrims to take a holy dip in Mullaiperiyar River that flows near the temple. Pilgrims will also lift water from the river to pour on the Kambam, holy wooden pole installed in the outer prakaram of the temple.
The festival will formally commence on Tuesday with arrival of Sri Gowmariamman to the temple from Veerapandi.
Already, the temple wore a festive look as devotees have started thronging temple with fire pots for the past five days.
With comfortable storage in the dam, the PWD officials did not find any difficulty in releasing water from the dam for the festival. A total of 41 cusecs of water has been released from Vaigai dam for drinking water supply to Madurai city. With no agriculture activities in the down stream areas, water released from Periyar dam would automatically reach Vaigai dam only.
Adequate police force has also been deployed on the temple premises to regulate the crowd and provide security to them.
Special buses
The State Transport Corporation will also operate special buses to Veerapandi from various places from Tuesday.
