Seven steel pilferers held

Five tonnes of steel and two autos seized from them



In the net: CCS and Anantapur rural police with the thieves held in connection with steel theft in Anantapur on Saturday.

ANANTAPUR: A gang allegedly involved in the theft of steel used in construction was arrested by the police of Anantapur Rural and Crime Control Stations here on Saturday. About five tonnes of steel and two autos, all worth about Rs. 3 lakhs were also seized from their possession.

Seven persons were arrested in this regard and three other members of the gang were still at large.

Inspectors of CC and rural stations A. Srinivasulu and Mahabub Basha, respectively, and Atmakur SI Devanand told newspersons that Krishna was the kingpin of the gang. He would work as watchman at buildings under construction and collect information about the steel available (stored) at other such buildings under construction in the vicinity.

Auto drivers

Based on the material available at different locations he would hatch a plan and with the help of other members of the gang they would lift the material. Majority of the gang members are auto drivers, who run autos in the day and commit crimes like thefts in the night. The arrested members of the gang are E. Krishna (28) , C. Sreeramulu (20), P. Adinarayana (27), V. Balarachuri (23), B. Adi (26), K. Prabhakar (22) and S. Ramu (27), all belonging to the villages around Anantapur. Three other members of the gang E. Gangadhar, E. Ramanjaneyulu and Nagesh were still at large.

The gang allegedly robbed material from a school building being constructed near Atamakur, near a complex under construction in Mangalivari colony and near the SKU College of Technology under construction on the campus of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, all during April.

The police arrested the gang near a private college of education besides NH-7 on the outskirts of the town. All the gang members were drunkards, the police said.
