Transport Department to leverage technology

Suresh Krishnamoorthy.

HYDERABAD: The Transport Department is shifting into overdrive, leveraging technology to help improve enforcement and increase revenue. While the department achieved revenues to the tune of Rs. 1,603 crore in the fiscal 2007-08, the government has fixed a target of Rs. 2,289 crore for 2008-09.

Transport Commissioner Raymond Peter told The Hindu that a proposal to procure 400 laptops through the Andhra Pradesh Technology Services was cleared by the government. The laptops would be issued to each one of the 257 Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) in the department and also to the 49 Road Transport Officers (RTOs), 18 Deputy and five Joint Commissioners in the State. Also, a number of Assistant MVIs too would use the laptops, he said.

How it works

Explaining how the computers would help officers in enforcement, he said that AMVIs, MVIs and RTOs would key in their vehicle check reports (VCRs) while on the field itself as and when they stopped a vehicle and depending on the violations noticed.

Soon after returning to their work stations, the officers would upload the VCRs onto the Central Transport Server located in the State capital.

Once uploaded, the VCRs would take the form of a Management Information System (MIS) report that would update information on individual vehicle and driving licences, Mr. Peter said. For example, if a vehicle or driver was found violating the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the offence would be almost instantly updated against the individual files on the server.
