Theatre to showcase Kalahandi’s rich culture

BERHAMPUR: A week-long State-level short plays competition would start at Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district from Sunday.It is an effort by the organisers to prove the vibrancy of art and culture in Kalahandi district said Satyanarayan Mohapatra, who is the member of the organising committee.

The annual drama competition is being held for the second time in the memory of noted theater personality Prafulla Kumar Ratha.

This year there would be also be a competition of plays enacted by children below 14 years. Six children’s theater troupes have reached Bhawanipatna to take part in the competition. In the main competitive section 16 selected plays are taking part. Some of these plays are in Kosali dialect spoken in western Orissa. Veteran theater activist, Raju Padhi, assistant station director of AIR Bhawanipatna, Pabitra Kumar Srichandan and noted playwright Umesh Chandra Satpathy would be the judges of the drama competition.

Three upcoming young cultural activists of Kalahandi district would be honoured on the inaugural day. The persons to be honoured are Satyanarayan Mohapatra, Parameswar Mund and Pradeep Kumar Dhangadamajhi. Mr Mohapatra’ s documentary on floods in arid Kalahandi district in 2006 had won the first position in its category in the DD annual award.

Mr. Mund has shown his talents in the AIR annual awards in the drama category. Mr Dhangadamajhi had won the second prize in the multilingual drama festival of Cuttack.

During this short play competition four veteran theater activists of Kalhandi district would also be honoured. The contest will conclude on May 11.
