Ready for inauguration: The pipeline of the Shanti Sagar drinking water project in Chitradurga. Chitradurga: The Shanti Sagar drinking water project was put to various tests here on Saturday. Sources in the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewage Board, which has undertaken the project, said that the tests were successful. Vijay Kumar, Assistant Executive Engineer of the project, said that the technical staff had tested the 60-km pipeline from the dam to the city to ensure that there was no leakage or breakage. Within four days, water would be supplied to the overhead tanks in the city. The city receives water from the Vini Vilas Sagar dam. But the dam meets only 40 per cent of the drinking water demand, leaving the people to depend on borewells and other sources. To overcome the shortage of water, the authorities concerned implemented the Shanti Sagar project. He said that under the project, there was a proposal to utilise 0.05 tmcft of water from the Bhadra channel to be stored in the Shanti Sagar dam. The project got administrative approval in February 2003. The project was estimated at Rs. 63 crore. It was scheduled to be completed by November 2006. But owing to technical difficulties, the project got delayed by two years. However, despite the delay, the project had been completed without any cost escalation. “We wanted to complete the project within the stipulated time, but at Bhimasamudra people objected to laying of the pipeline,” Mr. Vijay Kumar said. He said that the project would supply at least 135 litres of water to each person daily. Besides the city, the project covered Bhimasamudra, Kandavadi, Bommenhalli, Hireguntnur, Hiligur, Manangi, Siddaur and Malappanahatti, he added.
