Karunakar Reddy accused of violating poll code

Staff Correspondent

He is using money and muscle power to lure voters: Prakash

DAVANGERE: M.P. Prakash, former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress candidate for Harpanahalli in Davangere district, on Saturday accused Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Karunakar Reddy of violating the model code of conduct.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Prakash alleged that Mr. Reddy was using money and muscle power to win the election.

Seized

Mr. Prakash said that the authorities had seized Rs. 50 lakh being brought to Harpanahalli on two occasions and Rs.10 crore that was being transported from Andhra Pradesh to Harpanahalli.

Liquor and saris were being distributed to voters by the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, he alleged.

With this being the situation, he wondered whether the election would be free and fair in Harpanahalli.

Mr. Prakash said that he would bring this to the notice of the Election Commission. He wondered how the authorities could keep quiet though the BJP candidate had been violating the model code of conduct.

Tradition

He said that the tradition of using money, liquor and saris, which was confined to Bellary alone, had been brought to Davangere also. People of Harpanahalli would not to be carried away by the gimmicks of Mr. Reddy, he said and expressed confidence that he would win the election.

He said that there were many aspirants for Congress ticket in Harpanahalli.

The party took other aspirants into confidence and they were working for his success, he said.

Mr. Prakash said that though he had been opposing the Congress for the past 40 years, he had nor realised that this party alone could give an effective and stable government.

Hence, he had joined the Congress, he said.
