‘The Centre will mobilise funds for the loan waiver scheme’ Prakash concerned over slow progress in development works in backward taluks
M.P. Prakash DAVANGERE: M.P. Prakash, Congress candidate for Harapanahalli, said on Saturday that the Congress-led Union Government had earmarked funds to waive loans of farmers and refuted the allegation of Bharatiya Janata Party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa that the government had only announced the scheme without releasing funds to implement it. Addressing presspersons here, he said that there would be contingency fund and the Government would initially use it till funds needed for the scheme were provided. He said that the pay commission’s recommendations for State and Union government employees had been implemented using the contingency fund. The Union Government would mobilise funds and implement the loan waiver scheme, the former Deputy Chief Minister said. Mr. Prakash expressed concern over the slow progress in development works in 119 backward taluks of the State. When he was the Deputy Chief Minister, Rs. 1,571 crore was earmarked and released to develop the backward taluks, including Jagalur and Harpanahalli in Davangere district, he said. But till March 2008, only Rs.700 crore had been spent, he said and appealed to Governor Rameshwar Thakur to take steps to complete the development works using the funds earmarked for the purpose. FundsHe said that the Union Government released Rs. 2,400 crore to 119 backward taluks in the State recently and urged the State Government to make use of the funds without any delay.
