‘Help BJP form the Government on its own this time’ ‘There is no infighting in the party’ HOLEHONNUR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Bharatiya Janata Party leader and MP Sushma Swaraj has charged the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre with allowing terrorism to spread to South India in the last four years. The shootout at the Indian Institute of Science was an indication of that. Ms. Swaraj was addressing the women’s convention organised by the BJP as part of the election camp for the Assembly elections from the Shimoga Rural (Reserve) Constituency here on Saturday. She said that while several countries had introduced their own laws to deal with terrorism, the UPA Government had chosen to repeal the Prevention Of Terrorism Act (POTA) on the plea that it was against Muslims.
Expressing concern over the failure of the Centre to keep inflation under check, she said the skyrocketing prices of foodgrains and other essential commodities had made the lives of the poor and the middle-class families miserable. She said that while the Budget presented by the Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram aimed at taking away money from the poor, the two Budgets presented by B.S. Yeddyurappa when he was the Finance Minister in the State sought to fill the pockets of the poor and neglected sections. Ms. Swaraj also criticised the Janata Dal (S) for having “betrayed” the BJP by going back on its promise to extend support to Mr. Yeddyurappa. She asked people to cast their votes in favour of the BJP and to ensure that it secured a clear majority. AffectedHassan Staff Correspondent writes: Ms. Swaraj said in Sakleshpur that the price rise had affected all sections of society. Never in the history of the country had prices of essential commodities skyrocketed to such an extent. According to her, the “wrong policies” adopted by the Union Finance Minister had caused such inflation. Ms. Swaraj said there was no infighting in the BJP and that all the leaders were behind B.S. Yeddyurappa. People knew he was the obvious choice. BJP candidate Nirvanaiah and the former Minister B.B. Shivappa were present.
