Special Correspondent

The programme is aimed at teacher empowerment

CHENNAI: A week-long workshop for primary schoolteachers from different parts of the State, organised by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and ASHA for Education, was inaugurated here on Saturday.

The programme was aimed at teacher empowerment and acquainting young teachers with the developmental aspects of children and appropriate teaching strategies, said V. Kamakoti, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Another important aspect was to create sturdy, multi-purpose, bright learning teaching materials that focussed learning with joy. The picture dominoes helped the children of Balwadis learn sequencing through matching pictures of fruits.

Sight reading

The same cards could be used for higher levels for sight reading as well as practising addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

The first programme was held five years ago and 29 teachers from 12 schools took part in it. In this year’s programme, more than 80 teachers from 15 districts were taking part, the organisers said.

More than 200 young teachers have completed the programme in the past five years.

K. Ramamoorthy, Chairman, Centre for Continuing Education, IIT-Madras and Lakshmi Suryanarayanan, Headmistress, Olcott Memorial High School, spoke.
