Summer camps feel the heat

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Sweltering heat and unbearable humidity coupled with heat wave in the city is taking a heavy toll on the participation of sportspersons in various summer coaching camps. Outdoor games, especially cricket, seem to be the major casualty.

The scorching sun has forced the Krishna District Cricket Association (KDCA) to cancel the evening session of the camps being held at Siddhartha Medical College and IGMC Stadium.

“Players are getting dehydrated due to the hot conditions and are unable to concentrate on the game. We’re wrapping up the morning session by 9 a.m. itself. As a precautionary measure, we’re supplying mineral water and glucose to the players. A cap on the scalp is a must,” said KDCA secretary Koka Ramesh on Saturday.

Cricket camps, which are popular among children, are wearing a lean look with only 200 youngsters registering their names. “Last year we had around 350 participants for the general camp. This year the turnout is less and heat is one of the reasons for the poor registration,” Mr. Ramesh said.

Sports Authority of India gymnastic Coach Y. Rammohan underlines the importance of keen observation by coaches in assessing the condition of the youngsters.
