Pressure on Shivlal to continue

Staff Reporter

High-level meeting of Hyderabad Cricket Association today

Support for Shivlal may surprise him coming as it does from unexpected quarters

HYDERABAD: The ‘Ginger Group’ is working overtime to persuade N. Shivlal Yadav, secretary of Hyderabad Cricket Association, to seek another term contrary to his pronounced inclination to quit the body once for all. Reasons may be plenty but one which stood out and prominent across the cross section within the affiliated members of the HCA was the animosity towards Dr. M. V. Sridhar, incumbent vice-president.

Serious questions are being asked about his contribution to the sport at ground level despite being in the HCA for a long time and being a cricketer himself. The other factors against him is the argument that he doesn’t have time to spend by virtue of his senior position in the Satyam Group and his accessibility to the members. Interestingly, a high-level meeting is scheduled tomorrow where in all the office-bearers of HCA will join Shivlal in the deliberations to force him to have a re-think on his move which has apparently not gone well. “Shivlal has a moral obligation to stay for another term and complete the job at the stadium in all respects,” is former HCA secretary P. R. Man Singh’s argument. “In my view, there should not be any second thoughts from his side for another term as HCA secretary”.

The support for Shivlal may surprise him coming as it does from unexpected quarters. “Yes, they are putting lot of pressure on me to seek another term. But, as I said earlier, any final decision will have to be in consultation with my family members who were totally against me staying in the HCA,” reiterates Shivlal. It is also pointed out that as per the HCA constitution, the returning officer should be nominated one month before the scheduled annual general meeting. With the IPL matches scheduled till May 27 and given the track record of HCA in conveniently ignoring the tenets of the constitution, it is highly unlikely that the elections including for the post of HCA secretary will be held before this month-end.

In a way, enough hints are being thrown that to avoid someone who is not their favourite taking over as secretary, the majority in the HCA is of the view that Shivlal is a better choice for them for obvious reasons. A clear picture is likely to emerge tomorrow.
