NEW DELHI: Commending the performance of the Delhi Metro railway and the high standards its has set for other transport services to emulate, Union Urban Development Secretary M. Ramachandran on Saturday said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had emerged as a model for urban transport globally. Speaking at the 14th Foundation Day celebrations of the Corporation, Mr. Ramachandran -- who is also the Chairman of DMRC – said through the metro railway the entire country had been able to witness what a safe, secure, efficient service the system can be. He said the second phase of the metro would change the urban transport scenario in the city and expressed hope that DMRC would complete the construction work much before the start of the Commonwealth Games in 2010. DMRC Managing Director E. Sreedharan attributed the success of the metro railway to its work culture and expressed confidence that the punctuality, integrity and professional competence of its employees would help complete Phase II of the project on schedule. Dr. Sreedharan said adherence to the principles of punctuality and integrity had ensured that the Delhi Metro is counted as one of the best in the world. Director (Electrical) Satish Kumar said DMRC had been able to maintain the punctuality of trains at 99.9 per cent and with introduction of GPS-enabled feeder bus service in November 2007 there had been a 5 per cent rise in ridership. The DMRC is also collaborating with IIT Delhi to develop the course content for a post-graduate diploma in metro technology programme. On the occasion of the Foundation Day, the Vishwavidyalaya station, with an earning of Rs.3 lakh a day, was declared the “Best Metro Station”. Anil Kumar Meena, Assistant Station Manager at Central Secretariat and Patel Chowk, won the “Metro Man of the Year (2007-08)” award for his services in the customer support section.
